Breakthrough T1D

Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) is a global leader in Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Founded over 50 years ago in the United States and established in Australia in 1972, the organisation is dedicated to accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat Type 1 diabetes and its complications.  Its vision is for a world without Type 1 diabetes whilst making the lives of people with T1D easier, safer and healthier until that happens.

In 2023, the Ottomin Foundation announced a $250,000 commitment over five years to support Breakthrough T1D Australia. This funding contributes to a free screening program for children and young adults with a family history of T1D, involving the testing of islet autoantibodies—highly sensitive and specific markers for early detection of the disease.

Driven by a personal mission to advance medical wellbeing, Ottomin Foundation founders Richard and Jennie Kovacs are deeply committed to the fight against T1D. Jennie Kovacs also serves as an ambassador and active volunteer for Breakthrough T1D, further reinforcing the Foundation’s dedication to this cause.
